Writings require polishing to really shine
The first thing to remember with writings is that no writing comes out
finished. Screen out your formal education when
you’re writing your first draft. Your initial goal in writing should be to
completely eliminate your internal editor: that second guessing that makes you
stop writing mid sentence to cross out words or start over again and again. You
want to get all of your thoughts written down at once, you can always edit your
writing later. Try not to hear the criticism of past educators as you write.
Re-educating yourself
In a lot of ways modern computer writing programs are counterproductive to
this, they point out potential errors immediately, making it very tempting to
correct as you write. This will slow down your writing process and interrupt the
flow of ideas. What will be compelling and communicative about your writings is
if they are in your voice, your stream of consciousness, which is specific to
you because it is saturated with the sensory details of your personal
experiences.
Educators teach you a lot of formal rules about
writing, but these rules mean nothing if you become so focused on them that
your writing becomes formulaic. These rules of writing should become like a
painter’s techniques, intuitive so that you don’t consciously think about them
at all when writing, only conscious of them when you make the pointed and
educated reason to break one.
