Step up to Writing helps educators teach writing
better!
Step up to Writing is a program that educators use to help students learn how
to write better. It is a program that is targeted to educators as a tool for
them to use in the classroom to help their students learn how to organize their
writing. Step Up is available from Sopris West, a company that has produced
educational resources since 1978.
Program splits writing essay into four sections
If you are an educator, being able to say that you know the Step Up program
will no doubt help you when you are looking for jobs on job web sites like
Career Builder or Monster.com.
The Step Up program helps students learn by breaking down their writing process
into pre-writing process strategies. Instead of assigning students essays to
write and leaving them alone, teachers help them learn how to break their
writing up into four distinct parts:
• Go!
• Slow Down!
• Stop!
• Go!
Basically this translates to writing your topic sentence(s) (Go!), breaking it
into key statements (Slow Down!), going into detail with evidence and
explanation (Stop!), and then finishing with your topic summary (Go!).
Learning how to write requires pre-writing and a logical approach to getting
one’s thoughts out on paper. The Step Up program helps kids understand how
writing is really about thinking before you start writing a final version.
