Speech writing requires special considerations
Speech writing overall is very similar to essay writing in general. The big
difference is that instead of a topic, you usually will have a theme that you
want to convey. To convey your general theme, you may include a couple of
mini-topics. For most people, writing speeches was not a part of their general
education so they won’t have a lot of preparation or
experience with writing speeches. But being able to give effective speeches can
be a very important part of people’s careers.
Speech Writers keep their checklist of special considerations
Here is a list of tips for writing speeches to help you hone your general
writing skills when you need to write a speech:
• Keep your speech simple. Listeners won’t have a copy of your speech; they
can’t go back and re-read a difficult passage.
• Don’t use a lot of statistics or data in your speech. Information like this
will be hard to take in during a verbal reading of your speech.
• Talk to the audience; use “you” frequently. Make sure you tailor your speech
to your audience.
• Use shorter sentences in your speech. You want to be able to make frequent eye
contact with your audience. This will be hard to do if you’re looking down at
long sentences to finish them.
• Read your speech aloud to hear how it sounds.
• Mark up the speech. Use your own special marks to remind you what to emphasize
and where to take a pause in your speech when you give it.
• Watch speech lengths. On the average, you can speak 125-150 words per minute.
Make sure your speech length matches how much time you have to give your speech.
Spend plenty of time rehearsing your speech so that you do all of your hard work
justice. If you aren’t happy with your performance or the outcome of your
speech, you can always work on it for next time. Consider how a
distance learning course could help
you build your speech skills.
