Sample resumes can help you build your career
Sample resumes provide a plethora of information that you can use to advance
your career. By this I am not talking about copying somebody else’s resume
outright. You can find tons of sample resumes by looking at online job sites.
Some job sites, like career builder, will
charge you to access the site’s resumes. If you don’t want to shell out the
money to sneak a peak, then look for a job site online that doesn’t require a
subscription to view resumes.
Don’t start from scratch with your resume, begin with your
Career Builder strategy instead
However, you can glean a lot of useful information from a sample resume:
• A sample resume from somebody a level above you will show you what experience
and skills you need to build in order to advance.
• A sample resume for the position you want may indicate salary requirements
that you could use for your own negotiations.
• A sample resume may include professional affiliations that you should consider
joining yourself.
• A sample resume may serve as a useful reminder to yourself for what you should
put on your resume. “Oh yeah, I’ve done that, too.” Is that a fact? Then go
ahead and include it in your resume as well.
• A sample resume can be really helpful in the case of a career change. When
you’re changing careers you usually need help exchanging industry specific buzz
words or terms into the terms of your target industry.
After you’ve gathered all the information you could from a sample resume, look
for formats that you liked. Use somebody else’s resume format as a base for your
own resume. Using somebody else’s format or template will help you build your
resume faster. If you do use somebody else’s file as a starting point, make sure
you scrub all personal meta-data before you distribute your
resume. The converse is true as well. If you find formats you don’t like,
you’ll know to stay away from it while building your own resume.
