Persuasive writing needs to focus on tone to be
effective
With persuasive writing, the difference between a paper that will come across
as professional and one that comes across like you’ve got a couch on your front
porch is the tone of your persuasive essay. Because you’re likely to be assigned
a number of persuasive essays to write while you work on your college
education, do yourself a favor and develop a winning
tone in your persuasive writings.
Going off the deep-end in your essay won’t win points
Educators and other readers are not impressed with sarcastic, condescending,
or self-righteous tones. Instead of adding the “exclamation point” to your
writing, you end up alienating your reader. They get distracted with the
“colorful” writing. Sometimes readers may not even “get” your sarcasm or satire.
Instead, take on a professional, respectful, and objective tone for your
persuasive essays. Use facts, statistics, and quotes to build up your argument.
If you find yourself getting so worked up when you are writing your persuasive
essay, you may need to find another topic that you can objectively write about.
While reading a persuasive essay that is “heavily charged” may be funny at
first, trust me, the reader will tire of the attitude soon and wish you had just
stuck with the point.
The real underlying problem with a poor tone in a
persuasive essay is that you will
either make the reader feel that they are being manipulated (i.e. how some guys
feel at “chick flicks”) or the reader will think you’ve gone off the deep-end
and then believe that your persuasive essay is not credible writing which they
should consider seriously.
Learning to write using the correct tone is an invaluable skill for writing
persuasive. Legal writing often requires building a case for or against somebody
or something. Successful lawyers and politicians are known for their ability to
set just the right tone in their orations.
