Persuasive essays fail when scope is too large

Persuasive essays often fail to be successfully persuasive when their scope is too large. Why? Because what happens is the writer cannot effectively convince the reader that the essay’s point of view is correct. There’s just too broad a topic for the writer to do the topic justice in one persuasive essay.

Limit your topic so you can persuade effectively

You’ll be assigned to write many argumentative essays (another way to describe the persuasive essay) while you work on your college education. To produce an effective persuasive essay, keep the topic scope small.

Here the downfalls to writing about too general a topic in your persuasive essay:

• Your essay becomes nothing more than a list of arguments. Because the topic was so broad, you end up inundating your reader with all the different facts, quotes, statistics, examples, etc. that you need but they end up losing their impact. You end up writing a superficial essay that does not sufficiently convince the reader to your point of view.
• Your essay opens itself up to too much opposition. Keeping your essay topic small allows you to anticipate all arguments and address them. With a broad topic, there’s going to be a number of issues that you won’t even think about when it comes time to writing your persuasive essay.
• You’ll run into problems with organizing your essay. If you can effectively split your essay into more than one section, you’ve probably got too broad a topic for one persuasive essay.

If you have too general of an essay topic, you can narrow it down by brainstorming different areas within that topic.
