Essay writing redux
Are you still unhappy with your essay writing? You’ve come up with your
topic, outline, and content. You’ve even included a bibliography for the few
quotes you referenced in your essay. If you want to improve the chance you’ll
get higher grades on your essays, consider getting an
education in tight writing.
Tighten your writing up with a catch list
What I’m talking about you may not learn in school. It’s not that educators
want to keep it out of your education. It’s just that tight writing doesn’t
usually fall into a class syllabus. What is tight writing? It’s writing that is
easy to read, that cuts out dribble, and is clear with what it’s conveying.
Here is a catch list of things to look for when you think you’re done writing
your essay:
• Keep a list of words or phrases that you don’t need in your essay. Here is a
good start: very, needless to say, no doubt, really.
• Change boring passive verb sentences in your essay to ones with active verbs.
Instead of “He was hit by Sue,” write “Sue hit him.”
• Edit out any reiteration in your essay. You don’t need to say the same thing a
couple of times.
• Get rid of unnecessary adverbs in your essay. Chances are you can come up with
a better verb that what you have.
• Get rid of prepositional phrases in your essay when you can. Turn them into
adjectives. Instead of “Tank for saltwater fish,” write “a saltwater fish tank.”
