To come up with topics for your essays, consider the following sources:
• Your personal interests and dislikes. Start a list with “I like…” and another
one with “I don’t like…” Many essays are opinion pieces.
• Scan the news for any topical ideas to write your essay on.
• Go online and find a op ed piece that you either agree with or hate. Write
your response topic to it.
• Look around your room. Do you see objects and words? Anything evoke a strong
feeling from you? Write about that!
Now that find the topic you’re going to write about. Going through your topic
list, circle your top three topics that you find the most interesting to write
about. Write a rough outline for the first one. If you can’t find enough to
write, say a 100 word outline on a topic, then throw it out and go on to the
next topic. You need an essay topic that will be
easy for you to write about.
