Editing as freelance work
Is freelance editing in your future? Are you the go-to person whenever your
boss needs to have any documents edited before they go out? Secretly (or not so
secretly) does it bother you when you see “its” and “it’s” used incorrectly?
Many people work as editors part-time at home.
Try a career builder strategy by moonlighting from home
When looking for freelance work as an editor, you need to look beyond
traditional job search sites like career builder or monster. Most of the jobs
posted on their sites do not focus on freelance work. There are a number of
sites for the freelancer: sologig.com, guru.com, and elance.com. You’ll find
postings for careers as editors on those sites.
If you’re a strong writer, it will be no problem at all to find work as an
editor. Not sure if you know what to edit? There are
education programs out there, distance learning included, that can whip you
into editor shape. After a few classes, start freelancing as an editor.
Thankfully, learning what to edit and when is a straight-forward business. As
you build your skills set, don’t be afraid to start using them as a freelance
editor. You can find a junior editor position if you want to break in gently.
After you build your portfolio up, you won’t have enough time to keep up with
those wanting you to edit their documents. Editors usually develop strong
rapport with their clients and receive much repeat work to edit for them.
