Descriptive writing should capture the reader’s
attention
Descriptive writing should be exciting and intriguing. When you’re describing
something, try to write it to somebody as if you were selling the idea of it or
as if you would be paid if you convinced the person that they could actually
imagine the subject of your descriptive essay via your description.
Write for all five senses in your descriptions
While working on your education, expect to be
assigned as least one descriptive essay before you graduate. If you don’t know
where to start, make an outline with each of the five senses plus your emotional
response to your subject. The outline should look like:
• introduction
• description
o see
o touch
o feel physically
o hear
o smell
o feel emotionally
• summary
Then, just start writing in notes of different ways you can describe your
subject using the senses and your emotions. Not all of the senses will make
sense. For example, if you’re describing a sandwich, you may not have a “hear”
response unless you can hear yourself chewing on the food or the crunching of
the sandwich.
After you’ve finished writing your notes, think of ways to make your writing
more descriptive. Is there anything you can exaggerate with a simile? Can you
use any adjectives or adverbs to help describe your subject?
Think of how you would describe your subject if you were talking to a friend
about it. Catch your ramblings down on paper and see if any of them would help
further describe your subject in your
descriptive essay.
