Descriptive essays can be fun to write

Writing descriptive essays can be fun as long as you understand what you’re writing. When writing a descriptive essay, you’re basically describing a person, place, or thing. To describe it, use as many of the five senses as possible plus describe any emotional feelings you may have.

Make sure you actually describe your subject when you write

If you’re confused, you can find many examples of descriptive writing online. Many students working on their education find college level writing workshops online that help with descriptive writing assignments.

The descriptive essay is organized either chronologically or spatially. If you’re describing Thanksgiving Day, you might describe the day chronologically, starting with the morning and ending with the evening. If you’re describing Thanksgiving Dinner, you might describe the dinner spatially, starting with what’s on the table and who’s sitting around the table.

It’s not hard to write a descriptive essay if you start with an outline of all the different ways you can describe your essay object:

• Taste
• See
• Hear
• Smell
• Touch - Feel physically
• Feel emotionally

You may not be able to come up with descriptions for each sense. A TV show may not leave you with much “smell” that you can describe. After you fill in your outline, consider how you can make your essay further descriptive, with the use of more:

• adjectives
• adverbs
• similes

Things to Consider as You Write Your Descriptive Essay
- Think of an instance that you want to describe.
- Why is this particular instance important?
- What were you doing?
- What other things were happening around you? Is there anything specific that stands out in your mind?
- Where were objects located in relation to where you were?
- How did the surroundings remind you of other places you have been?
- What sights, smells, sounds, and tastes were in the air?
- Did the sights, smells, sounds, and tastes remind you of anything?
- What were you feeling at that time?
- Has there been an instance in which you have felt this way before?
- What do you want the reader to feel after reading the paper?
- What types of words and images can convey this feeling?
- Can you think of another situation that was similar to the one you are writing about? How can it help explain what you are writing about?
- Is there enough detail in your essay to create a mental image for the reader?
