College Application Essays
College application essays are perhaps the most important part of your
college application. For most people, besides their grade point average, it is
the single most important piece of paper in determining what university or
college will play a role in their future education.
Investing in your education
A lot of applicants churn out their essays, treating them as perfunctory
school assignments, but the essay is what is going to make the person reviewing
your application see you as a person that is represented by an application as
opposed to just a stack of rather uninteresting papers. You have to remember
that the people that go through these application (possibly several hundred
college applications) are educators, and there for interested in people and
ideas, not necessarily raw numbers. A well written essay will make you sound
better educated and more thoughtful than your transcripts probably will.
Treat your essay for college application like an
interview, or specifically a monologue, something that will represent what
the people that know and like you think of you; be interesting and educationally
ambitious.
Keeping this in mind, you don’t want to exaggerate and come off as less sincere.
Make sure that all your punctuality, grammar, and spelling are correct.
It may seem overwhelming to put this level of thought into every college
application essay, especially depending on the number of schools you’re applying
to, so look over all of your application essay requirements first to figure how
many applications a single essay could count for.
