Choosing a career should start with your skills,
aptitude, and desires
Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions you can make in your
life. In America (also other parts of the world), one’s career is important to
one’s identity. We often define who we are by our careers. One of the first
questions you’ll get at a party is “So, what do you do?” Being a successful
career builder is correlated with wealth or at
least self sufficiency.
Use job search sites like Career Builder to investigate career
paths
Often people get advice that they should do what they love and the money will
follow. If that were true, we’d all be beach bums in the Caribbean. Or at least
I would be! Start your career search with a through examination of your own
skills, aptitude, and desires.
After you have a list of what you’re good at, what you like to do, and what you
want to do, research careers to see which career paths
make sense in terms of financial responsibility. You mustn’t choose your career
solely on the money returns but all things equal; why not choose a career that
will reward you more financially? If you have trouble deciding how much you need
to make, project yourself 10 years down the road. Itemize expected costs and see
which careers you’ve chosen support your long-term financial goals.
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes an
Occupational Outlook Handbook online providing information on different careers.
After you’ve come up with a set of candidate careers from a site like that,
double check demand and salary ranges on job search sites like monster.com.
Choosing your career wisely will help you stay satisfied in your career but
don’t think that choosing your career is a one-time choice. Many people
successfully choose different careers over their work lives, building both their
personal satisfaction and wealth along the way.
