Career Search Tips for the Career Changer
When you’re making a career search and you’re changing
careers, there are certain aspects to your search that you’ll need to
consider. Career changing can be very hard to do but rewarding at the same time.
Special Rules for Changing Careers
Spend extra time on your resume, making sure that it showcases your current
skill set for your target career. Make sure you scrub industry specific
buzzwords and use language that your target employer will understand.
Search for a resume of somebody who has your target career. Examine their
resume. Do they have any education that you are
missing? If so, search for a school that can give you the same. Distance
learning provides an asynchronous setting so that you can “go to school” when
its convenient for you. Going to school online can help make you a better
candidate for a job in a new career.
Don’t start over again in your new career. It is tempting to give into
recruiters who are searching for the best employee at the lowest price. They
will try to persuade you that because you’re trying to change your career, you
should consider yourself lucky to get a break in your new career. Don’t believe
them. There are skills you have on your resume that cross careers.
Writing, for example, or managing people, is
the same no matter what career you work in. If you find yourself in an interview
where you’re being harangued over your lack of experience, don’t acquiesce to a
lower salary. Continue your search for another job in your target career.
Finally, prepare yourself for all the hard questions that you’re going to hear
during an interview. Make sure you have good answers when your interviewer asks
you why you want to change careers and why you’re qualified for the new career
position.
