Career descriptions help you win interviews
Career descriptions can be a powerful tool that you should use when applying
for open positions. To win an interview spot, you
must convince the recruiter that you’re perfect for that job. To do that, you’ve
got to get inside their head.
Tailor your resume to each specific job opening and prepare for
your interview
You don’t have to be a mind reader to advance your career. You’ve got the job
description. Treat your resume like a response to a
Request for Proposals. Use the job description to customize your resume. Using
the description as a guide to what the employer wants, highlight needs and
downplay skills or experience that won’t help you win the job. You should see an
increase in offers for interviews after you start tailoring your resume.
Don’t stop with the resume. To really increase the number of interviews you’re
invited to, use the same approach with your cover letter. Read though the
description and circle parts that you have nailed with your own experience and
education. Address those parts specifically in your cover letter. Make sure you
include descriptions of what the employer wants and a description of how you
meet each need.
Customizing your resume to target specific careers will help you increase how
many interviews you are asked to go to. Finally, if you see anything in a job
description that you’re lacking in yourself; make a plan to overcome those
barriers. Enter a distance learning
program or volunteer on the weekends, whatever it takes, do it and your career
will thank you.
