Argument essay topics at your fingertips
Argument essay topics are often the deciding factor in whether a paper is
going to get a good grade or not. There are two things going on here. Some
topics are inherently better than others and some topics are better for you than
others. You’ll find writing argument essays a critical part of your
education. Here’s how to choose your next topic for
an argument essay.
Writing argument essays requires pre-writing research
First, to be effective, an argument essay topic should be something that
people are polarized about. You want a topic that people have strong opinions
about. Whether grape or lime is the better Kool-Aid flavor is not a good
argument essay topic. Whether or not you can tie Kool-Aid drinks with
hyperactivity is slightly better. What would be best is whether we should ban
Kool-Aid drinks from being sold to children under 21.
Usually topics that include subjects that you are not supposed to discuss at the
water cooler at work make for good argument essays. Anything that ties into
ethics makes for an automatic good topic for an argument essay. Currently, stem
cell research is a good example, as is cloning.
To find your next argument essay topic, look at news headlines or magazine
articles. Any topic that catches your eye will probably catch your reader’s eye
as well. Now that you have a couple of topics, narrow them down for your next
argumentative essay:
• Stick with a topic that you easily understand. If the legal or biological
ramifications or any ramifications for that matter don’t make a lot of sense to
you, trust me, your paper will not be that persuasive.
• Stay away from topics that get you too worked up. If you can’t maintain a
professional degree of separation, your writing will be too emotional to be
effective.
