6 Traits of writing model
6 Traits of writing is a framework that people use to both teach and assess
writing. Since the 1980s, writing teachers have worked together to figure out
how to provide reliable and accurate feedback on written assignments. After all,
how could educational teachers provide students a quality
education if they didn’t have a framework to provide
feedback on their writing?
Educators suggest focusing on 6+1 Trait Writing to improve your
writing
Northwest Regional Educational Library (NWREL) provides resources to
teachers. One of the things educators came up with is the 6 Trait Writing Model,
which they have now promoted to the 6+1 Trait Model.
The six traits are:
• Trait # 1: Ideas
• Trait # 2: Organization
• Trait # 3: Voice
• Trait # 4: Word Choice
• Trait # 5: Sentence Fluency
• Trait # 6: Conventions
NWREL has introduced a new trait that they consider to be an important part of
writing quality:
• Trait #7: Presentation
Basically, what they’ve done is for each trait, they spell out exactly what
would give you 5 out of 5 points, 3 out of 5 points, or 1 out of 5 points. For
example, with “Word Choice”:
• A written assignment would receive 5 out of 5 points if the writer uses
“powerful and engaging” words.
• A written assignment would receive 3 out of 5 points if the piece has
“functional” language.
• A written assignment would receive 1 out of 5 points if the writer
“demonstrates a limited vocabulary.”
